The SILPS trio, or simply the trio, is the collective name for the three original members of the STS-127B crew: Frank Softey, Jack Mailey, and Courtney Hottihann. The STS-127B mission was the first of two (the other being STS-127 of Sergei Rochavov and Sai Hwong) conceived for the Search for Intelligent Life Project Shuttles (SILPS), a rather pointless NASA directive aimed at discovering intelligent life elsewhere in the universe from the confines of low-earth orbit. But hey, what's new?

The name "SILPS trio" is used to describe the three kidronauts far beyond the extent of the original mission, which concludes at the end of Book III. All future missions are ones undertaken by the trio themselves, often against the orders of Bob Sandals and NASA.
